Setting Up Permissions With LuckPerms

Explains how to install and use LuckPerms to set up permissions and ranks on your Minecraft server.

Want to set up ranks such as VIP, Moderator, or Admin with their own permissions? In this article, we explain how to install and use LuckPerms.

What is LuckPerms?

LuckPerms is one of the most used permission plugins for Minecraft. With it, you decide exactly which commands and features a player or group of players is allowed to use.

Installing via the Plugin Manager

The easiest way to install plugins is through our built-in Plugin Manager. You don't have to download anything yourself.

  1. Log in to the Game Panel and select your server.
  2. Click More at the bottom of the menu, then Plugins.
  3. Search for LuckPerms. Use the filters at the top to filter by name, plugin loader, and Minecraft version.
  4. Click the download icon on the plugin's tile to install it.
  5. Restart the server.

Can't find the plugin? Download the .jar file yourself from a trusted source and upload it via Files → plugins. See our article How Do I Add a Plugin to My Server? for the full manual steps.

Creating a rank

Use these commands in the console or as an operator in-game:

/lp creategroup vip
/lp group vip permission set essentials.kit.vip true
/lp user PlayerName parent add vip
  • creategroup creates a new group (rank).
  • permission set grants that group a specific permission.
  • parent add links a player to the group.

Using a web editor

Type /lp editor in the console to get a temporary link to a visual web editor. In this editor, you can easily adjust groups, permissions, and weights (rank order) without needing to remember commands.

Note: Don't forget to click Apply after editing in the web editor, otherwise your changes will not be saved.

Troubleshooting

  • Player does not receive permissions: check whether the player has been added to the right group with /lp user PlayerName info.
  • Permissions from another plugin don't work with LuckPerms: check whether that plugin supports Vault permissions.
