Moving Your Minecraft World to Another Server or Provider
Explains how to move your Minecraft world and related files from your current server to a new server or provider.
Want to bring your existing Minecraft world to a new server, for example during an upgrade or migration? In this article, we explain step by step how that works.
What do you need?
- Access to the Game Panel of your current server
- Access to the new server (at Etheron or elsewhere)
- Enough time, depending on the size of your world
Step 1. Make a backup of your current server
- Go to Backups in the Game Panel.
- Click Create Backup and give it a clear name.
- Wait until the backup is complete.
Step 2. Download the required files
You will need at least:
- the world folder(s), such as world, world_nether, and world_the_end
- the plugins or mods folder, including their configuration files
- server.properties
- any whitelist, ops, and banned-players files
Download these via the File Manager or via SFTP. See our article on connecting via FTP for help with this.
Step 3. Set up the same server software and version on the new server
Make sure the new server uses exactly the same Minecraft version and server software (for example Paper, Forge, Fabric) as the old server. If this differs, your world or plugins/mods may not load correctly.
Step 4. Upload the files to the new server
- Stop the new server.
- Upload the world folders, plugins/mods, and configuration files via the File Manager or SFTP.
- Start the new server and check the log for errors.
Note: Make sure you don't overwrite an existing world on the new server without first making a backup, in case something goes wrong.
Troubleshooting
- World does not load or shows errors: check whether the Minecraft version of the new server matches that of the old one.
- Plugins/mods do not work: check whether the server software (Paper/Spigot/Forge/Fabric) and version match exactly.
- Upload takes very long: large worlds are better uploaded as a
.zipfile instead of individual files.
