Installing Forge on Your Minecraft Server
Explains how to install the Forge mod loader on your Minecraft server through the Game Panel so you can run mods.
In this article, we explain how to install Forge on your Minecraft server, so you can add your own mods.
What is Forge?
Forge is one of the most popular mod loaders for Minecraft Java. Many mods and modpacks specifically require Forge to work. Always check on the mod's page (for example CurseForge or Modrinth) whether it needs Forge, Fabric, Quilt, or NeoForge.
Note: Forge, Fabric, Quilt, and NeoForge are not compatible with each other. A mod made for Fabric will not work on a Forge server, and vice versa.
Installing Forge
- Log in to the Game Panel and select your server.
- Make a backup first via Backups → Create Backup, especially if there is already a world on the server.
- Click More > Version Changer in the menu.
- Choose Forge as the server software.
- Select the desired Minecraft version and Forge build.
- Click View, then Install.
Note: Do not check WIPE SERVER FILES unless you deliberately want a completely clean server. This deletes everything on your server.
- Wait until the installation is complete and start the server.
Adding mods
- Download the desired Forge mod (
.jarfile) from, for example, CurseForge or Modrinth. - Stop the server.
- Open the File Manager or connect via SFTP.
- Place the
.jarfile in the mods folder. - Restart the server.
Troubleshooting
- Server does not start after adding a mod: check whether the mod is suitable for your Minecraft version and your Forge build. Check the startup log for the exact error.
- Players cannot connect: make sure players have installed the same Forge version and the same mods on their client.
