Migrating My Website to Etheron Web Hosting

Step-by-step plan to migrate your existing website from another hosting provider to Etheron web hosting.

Want to move your existing website from another hosting provider to Etheron? In this article, we explain step by step how this works.

What do you need?

  • Access to your current hosting panel (for example cPanel, Plesk, or another DirectAdmin panel)
  • An active web hosting package at Etheron
  • Possibly FTP access, see our article How Do I Connect to Web Hosting FTP?

Step 1. Make a backup at your current provider

If possible, make a full backup of your website and database at your current hosting provider. No access to a backup feature? Download manually instead:

  • all website files (via FTP or File Manager),
  • an export of your database (usually via phpMyAdmin, as a .sql file).

Step 2. Create the database at Etheron

Create a new, empty database in DirectAdmin. See our article Creating a MySQL Database in DirectAdmin.

Step 3. Upload the website and import the database

  1. Upload the website files via FTP or the File Manager to the public_html folder of your domain at Etheron.
  2. Import your .sql file via phpMyAdmin into the new database.
  3. If needed, update the database credentials in your website's configuration file (for example wp-config.php for WordPress), so it points to the new database.

Step 4. Test the website before the actual switch

Test your website at Etheron before actually switching over the domain name, for example via a temporary test domain, or by temporarily pointing the domain name to the new IP address locally on your computer (via the hosts file).

Note: Always test thoroughly before actually switching over the domain name. This way, you avoid downtime or a non-working website for your visitors.

Step 5. Switch over the nameservers or DNS

Everything working as expected? Then change your domain's nameservers to ns1.ping64.net and ns2.ping64.net. See our article How Do I Change My Domain's Nameservers?.

Note: Take DNS propagation into account after changing the nameservers. See our article Why Doesn't My Website Work After Adding a Domain? (DNS Propagation) for more explanation.

Troubleshooting

  • Website shows an error after migration: check whether the database credentials in the configuration file have been updated correctly.
  • Images or files missing: check whether all files have been fully uploaded, including hidden files and folders.
  • Email stops working after the switch: keep in mind that your MX records also need to move if you use email through this domain.
