Setting Up Admin Rights on Your Valheim Server

Explains how to set up admin rights on your Valheim server via adminlist.txt, so players can use server commands.

In this article, we explain how to give a player admin rights on your Valheim server, so they can use server commands such as kick, ban, and save.

Note: Admin rights do not grant access to cheats such as god, fly, or spawn. These are management commands only.

Step 1. Look up the player's SteamID64

You need the player's SteamID64 (a 17-digit number). You can look this up via a SteamID lookup website based on the profile URL, or have the player connect and read the ID from the server console/log in the Game Panel.

Step 2. Add the player to adminlist.txt

  1. Stop the server (this prevents your change from being overwritten).
  2. Log in to the Game Panel and select your server.
  3. Go to Files.
  4. Navigate to the .config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim folder (this is the default Valheim save location).
  5. Open adminlist.txt.
  6. Add the SteamID64 on a new line, one ID per line, with no extra spaces.
  7. Save the file and start the server again.

Step 3. Enabling the console for the player

The player needs to enable the in-game console themselves:

  1. Right-click Valheim in the Steam library and choose Properties.
  2. Under Launch Options, enter: -console
  3. Launch Valheim, connect to the server, and press F5 to open the console.

Useful admin commands

kick [name/ip/userID]
ban [name/ip/userID]
unban [ip/userID]
banned
save
ping
lodbias [1-5]

Troubleshooting

  • Commands don't work for the new admin: the player needs to reconnect after being added to adminlist.txt before the permissions become active.
  • adminlist.txt doesn't exist: start the server once, the file is then automatically created.
  • Using permittedlist.txt? Note: as soon as this file contains one ID, no one else can connect, including yourself if you forget to add yourself.
