Installing Mods From Thunderstore on Your Valheim Server (BepInEx)
Explains how to install mods from Thunderstore on your Valheim server via BepInEx.
In this article, we explain how to install mods from Thunderstore on your Valheim server via BepInEx.
BepInEx not active on your server yet?
By default, your Valheim server runs on Vanilla. To be able to use mods, your server must first be switched to BepInEx.
- Create a support ticket.
- Indicate which Valheim server it concerns and that you want to switch to BepInEx.
- We will switch this over for you.
Note: Before requesting this, make a backup of your world first via Backups → Create Backup in the Game Panel.
Installing mods
- Find the desired mod on Thunderstore.
- Download the mod manually (Manual Download), not via a local mod manager, that is for your own client, not for the server.
- Extract the file. Pay attention to the folder structure: the actual
.dllfiles are often in a subfolder such asplugins. - Log in to the Game Panel and select your server.
- Go to Files and open the BepInEx → plugins folder.
- Upload the mod's
.dllfiles (and any accompanying folders) into this folder. - Restart the server.
Note: Players who want to connect to a modded server often also need to install the same mods locally themselves, especially mods that add new content. Check this on the mod's Thunderstore page.
Troubleshooting
- Server no longer starts after adding a mod: remove the mod from BepInEx/plugins again and check whether the mod is compatible with your Valheim version.
- Mod doesn't seem to work: check whether all files are in the correct subfolder (for example
plugins, patchers, orconfig), and not loose in the root of BepInEx. - Players get an error when connecting: check whether they have installed the same mods on their own client.
Still stuck? Feel free to reach out via Discord or create a support ticket.
