Adjusting World Modifiers on Your Valheim Server
Explains how to adjust world modifiers such as combat, death penalty, resources, raids, and portals on your Valheim server.
With world modifiers, you can adjust the difficulty and playstyle of your Valheim world, for example easier combat or more resources. In this article, we explain how to set this up.
Note: Always make a backup first before adjusting world modifiers. See our article Making a Backup of Your Valheim World.
Which modifiers are there?
- Combat — combat difficulty:
veryeasy, easy, normal, hard, veryhard. - DeathPenalty — what you lose on death:
casual, veryeasy, easy, normal, hard, hardcore(withhardcoreyou permanently lose all your skills AND your tombstone with items). - Resources — how many resources you get:
muchless, less, normal, more, muchmore, most. - Raids — how often enemy attacks occur:
none, muchless, less, normal, more, muchmore. - Portals — what you can take through portals:
casual(everything, including metal),normal,hard,veryhard(no portals).
There are also ready-made presets: normal, casual, easy, hard, hardcore, immersive, and hammer (building without cost).
Setting modifiers via the in-game console
This is the most direct method and works on any Valheim dedicated server.
- Make sure you have admin rights. See our article Setting Up Admin Rights on Your Valheim Server if this is not yet the case.
- Connect to your server and open the console with F5 (make sure
-consoleis set in the Steam launch options). - Use the command to pick a preset:
setworldpreset Casual
- Or adjust individual modifiers:
setworldmodifier Combat easy
setworldmodifier DeathPenalty casual
setworldmodifier Resources more
setworldmodifier Raids less
setworldmodifier Portals casual
Note: These commands adjust the settings of the existing world. Some changes only become fully visible after reloading the world (for example by logging back in).
Troubleshooting
- Commands don't work: check whether you actually have admin rights (adminlist.txt) and whether the console is enabled via
-console. - Setting doesn't seem to work: some world settings (such as
nobuildcost, passivemobs, andnomap) are stored separately in the world files and are set viasetkeyinstead ofsetworldmodifier.
