Common Valheim Crashes and Solutions

Overview of common causes of crashes on your Valheim server, and how to fix them.

Does your Valheim server crash regularly? In this article, we discuss the most common causes and solutions.

Too little RAM allocated

A large, extensively explored world requires more memory. Check memory usage in the Game Panel and consider a larger package if you consistently hit the limit.

Incompatible or conflicting mods

Mods are the most common cause of crashes on a BepInEx server.

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Remove recently added mods one by one from BepInEx/plugins.
  3. Restart the server after each removal to test whether the problem is resolved.

Tip: Always add mods one at a time instead of all at once, so you immediately know which mod is causing a problem.

Corrupted world files

A hard crash during saving can damage world files.

  • In that case, restore the last working backup via Backups in the Game Panel.
  • Make sure your server is always shut down cleanly (via the Game Panel), not abruptly.

Wrong or outdated BepInEx version

After a Valheim update, an outdated BepInEx version or outdated mods can cause the server to no longer start.

  • Check whether BepInEx and your mods have been updated to a version that supports the current Valheim version.
  • If in doubt, contact us, we can help check this.

Full disk space

A full disk can cause the server to no longer be able to save or start. Check your disk usage in the Game Panel and remove old, unnecessary backups or files if needed.

Troubleshooting: checking log files

Always check the Console or server logs in the Game Panel first after a crash. This often contains the exact error message, making it much faster to find the cause.
