Increasing the Maximum Number of Players on Your Valheim Server

Explains why Valheim has a default limit of 10 players, and how you can increase this with mods.

Many customers ask why they cannot add more than 10 players at once to their Valheim server. In this article, we explain why this is the case and how to increase it.

Why is the limit 10 players?

Valheim has a default hard limit of 10 concurrent players. This is built into the game itself by the developer (Iron Gate) and cannot be raised through a setting in the Game Panel or a startup parameter.

How do you increase this then?

The limit can only be raised with the help of a mod, for example via Valheim Plus or a standalone mod such as MaxPlayerCount. This requires your server to run on BepInEx.

  1. Is your server still running on Vanilla? Create a support ticket to switch to BepInEx. See our article Installing Mods From Thunderstore on Your Valheim Server (BepInEx) for the next steps.
  2. Install the MaxPlayerCount mod (or use the setting in Valheim Plus) via BepInEx/plugins.
  3. Open the mod's configuration file in the BepInEx/config folder.
  4. Adjust the value for the maximum number of players.
  5. Restart the server.

Note: More players on a server also requires more processing power and memory. Consider a larger package if you notice the server slowing down with many concurrent players.

Troubleshooting

  • Limit stays at 10: check whether BepInEx is actually active and whether the mod is correctly installed and configured.
  • Server becomes slow with many players: this is normal, more players means more load; consider a package with more CPU/RAM.

Still stuck? Feel free to reach out via Discord or create a support ticket.
